IDIAP: Quality of life and facilities

The Idiap research establishment, based in Martigny, is a nonprofitmaking foundation specialized in multimedia information management and in man-machine multimodal interaction. Founded in 1991 by the city of Martigny, the State of Valais, the Federal Polytechnical School of Lausanne (EPFL), the University of Geneva and Swisscom, the Idiap is self-sufficient but tied to the EPFL by a common development plan.

65% of the financing of the Idiap budget, which is of 9 millions Swiss francs, are insured by research projects obtained after competitive procedures, while 35% are insured by public funds.

While about thirty people were employed in 2001, in 2009, the Idiap had got about a hundred workers, about 80 of which were researchers.

All the staff works in the western wing of the Centre du Parc in Martigny. The institute moved in there in August 2007. It now occupies 2500 m2 of premises distributed on four floors.
